Tesco is to start delivering pizzas as it seeks to turn its UK business around by adding new services.
Britain’s biggest retailer already sells hot food such as roast chicken, ribs and cooked sausages, for shoppers to take away, but is looking at new ideas to draw in customers.
It is launching a trial of a pizza delivery service at its new Extra store in Streatham, South London, situated within a social housing scheme containing hundreds of flats.

Extra services: Tesco is launching a trial of a pizza delivery service at its new Extra store in Streatham
Chief executive Phil Clarke is giving store managers more flexibility to come up with new initiatives to connect with local communities. The Streatham trial will initially offer deliveries only to those living in the immediate store vicinity.
Tesco’s director for London Andrew Yaxley said: ‘The pizza delivery idea came from the local store manager and is about trying new things.’
If successful the service could be rolled out around the country to take on Domino’s and Pizza Hut in a market worth some £6.9billion in the UK.
Tesco has lead the way in installing new concepts into its larger stores to make them different.
It is also about to take on McDonald’s in the fast-food market with a trial hamburger restaurant opening in Tesco’s Osterley store in North London the week after next.
Last year it bought the Giraffe restaurant chain for £48.6million, putting branches in a handful of stores to make the supermarkets into more of a destination.
